Skills Learned: MS
Paint, Parts of a computer, Graphic Design, and Creative thinking.
Standards Covered:
Math:
M8P1. Students will solve problems (using
appropriate technology).
M8A1. Students will use algebra to represent,
analyze, and solve problems.
Science:
S8CS5. Students will use the ideas of system, model,
change, and scale in exploring scientific
and technological matters.
Social Studies:
SS8E3 The student will
evaluate the influence of
development. a. Define profit and describe how profit is an
incentive for entrepreneurs.
Language Arts:
ELA8LSV1 The student
participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-student,
and group verbal interactions.
The Lesson:
You have just been hired by Ellison Technology
Consulting Firm to design a new
computer for XYZ computer manufacturing company. This is the largest sales
contract to date. You must design a
computer that appeals to younger users. You have been given the freedom to
redesign the look as much as possible as long as you keep the basic features.
After designing the computer, you will also be in charge of explaining the
geometrical shapes used in your design, figure out how many computers can be produced
per month, and determine the profit margin for XYZ.
Instructions:
1.
Open MS Paint
2.
Save document in THAWSPACE with your last name and parts. Example: smithparts
3
Draw the following 9 items using the appropriate tools: Remember these objects
need to be drawn to scale.
Monitor Floppy
Disk
CPU
(Case) Printer
Keyboard Scanner
Mouse Speakers
CD-ROM
(CD)
4.
Be prepared to answer the integration questions when you are done. You
can open MS Word and copy and paste your questions, then type in your answers. Use this symbol / for division sign. It’s
the question mark key on your keyboard.
Math Integration: Be Prepared
to discuss these in class.
How
many different geometrical shapes were used to draw
your computer?
XYZ
computer manufacturing company wants to use your design for their new line of
computers. XYZ computers plans on producing 25,000
units this year. There factory can
only produce X amount of computers per month. Joe Nerdelton, CEO of XYZ computers,
says it will take his company 6 months to produce the needed 25,000
computers. Solve for X and show
your work.
Science Integration:
Your
model work is not life like. It is reduced in size. Be
prepared to discuss scale and how
you would use scale to build the final product. If the scale of your drawing is
1 inch to 6 inches, how big would your computer be after XYZ makes it?
Social Studies
Integration:
XYZ
company has produced the 25,000 units they planned for
this year. It cost them $847 to produce each computer. This includes labor,
parts, and shipping. Retail stores
